چکیده

The goal of this research was to simulate and analyze the response of the Western Adriatic Current (WAC) to an abnormal event that occurred in the Adriatic Sea in mid-summer of 2003. At this time, a combination of extremely low discharge from the Po River and from other northwestern rivers caused by the prolonged dry season and the dominant Sirocco wind produced an ðunusual’ upwelling and caused the WAC to reverse along the northern and central Italian coasts. The simulations employed a high-resolution, low dissipative version of the DieCAST circulation model that was initialized with monthly averaged temperature and salinity data and spun up with a use of climatological wind data. Numerical experiments were performed with the use of COAMPS wind stress and heat flux data. The model runs performed under Sirocco wind forcing in combination with low river discharge (a quarter of the climatic mean) revealed that such these conditions do trigger upwelling and the reversal of the WAC along the Italian coast. The upwelling relaxation caused by changes in the wind direction was also studied. Qualitative simulation results were in agreement with the observations by Poulain et al. (2004).

Summer Upwelling in the South China Sea and its Role in Regional Climate Variations

Seasonal and interannual variations of summer upwelling off the South Vietnam coast and the offshore spread of cold water are investigated using a suite of new satellite measurements. In summer, as the southwesterly winds impinge on Annam Cordillera—a north-south running mountain range on the east coast of Indochina—a strong wind jet occurs at its southern tip offshore east of Saigon, resulting...

3D Modeling of Wind-Driven Circulation In The Northern Indian Ocean During Monsoon

Abstract The purpose of this research is to design and identify some of the natures and characteristics of high-resolution surface currents in the Northern Indian Ocean. استفاده از نرم‌افزار ComMIT در پهنه‌بندی خطر سونامی در سواحل جاسک

In the Tsunami of Dec. 26, 2004, although there was a large distance between the earthquake center of Indian Ocean and coastal cities of Iran, the Tsunami waves brought some damages in Chabahar coast. This means that if the earthquake center was closer to Iran, Iran’s coastal regions would have confronted serious danger... In the present study, we used ComMIT software (Community Model Int...

Delayed coastal upwelling along the U.S. West Coast in 2005: A historical perspective

[1] The timing of the onset of coastal upwelling in spring and its intensity over the upwelling season are critical factors in the productivity and structure of the California Current ecosystem (CCE). We use an index of coastal upwelling to characterize physical forcing over the latitudinal extent of the CCE, and compare the evolution of the upwelling season in 2005 with previous years. The ons...

Upwelling along the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula: dependence of trends on fitting strategy

We investigated upwelling variability along the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula for the period 1948−2009 by means of wind data extracted from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis project. According to most previous studies, a remarkable weakening in upwelling intensity has been observed in the area. However, the observed linear trends are highly dependent on the length of the series. Here we show ho...
